Grapes and raisins are actually toxic to dogs!
Researchers have reported severe kidney toxicity when dogs ingest
grapes or raisins. While the exact cause is not known, as little as
1/2 pound of grapes can be toxic for a 50 lb dog.
Since 4 pounds of grapes is equal to 1 pound of raisins, only 1/4 of
the dose would be needed to cause potential toxicity.
If your dog has ingested any significant quantity of grapes, it's best
to assume the worst and institute aggressive intravenous fluid therapy
and daily monitoring of kidney enzymes for up to 1 week. Signs of
vomiting usually begin within hours of ingestion, but kidney failure
may not be evident for more than 24 hours. If recent ingestion is known
or witnessed, the doctor may induce vomiting to reduce the amount of
grapes absorbed.
